Description

A long, single storey rubble-built block of probable pre-1834 origin, recently renovated and now containing two dwellings. The building is located on a slight rise within a clachan-like grouping to the west of Ballymacreelly Road, just under 2 miles west of Killinchy village.

The front south-east façade is of unpainted random rubble and comprises two gabled sections. The left section has a timber-sheeted door with small glazed panel, flanked by two windows with modern frames. The right section features a projecting gabled porch with a stable door similar in style, with a window to its left and three further windows to the left of that. To the far north-east is a small enclosed yard with high rubble wall. Both gables are blank. The rear contains four windows (two to each dwelling) and a tiny window opening to the far left. The roof is gabled with Bangor blue slates and has three sections in stepped formation. Tile-like stone parapets top the façade. Three recent brick chimney stacks are present, and PVC rainwater goods have been added.

The block has been completely renovated recently after a prolonged period of dereliction. The last section of thatch was removed during this work and the chimneys were rebuilt. The openings appear to have been altered, though this cannot be confirmed with certainty. Despite these modern interventions, the building retains an attractive largely traditional appearance, though the brick chimneys are somewhat incongruous.

Both dwellings are currently rented out as holiday homes. The building is shown on Ordnance Survey maps of 1834 and 1859-60, suggesting the structure largely corresponds to what exists today. The first valuation survey of circa 1835 does not record the property, likely because it fell below rateable value. The second survey of 1861 notes that the block belonged to John Cleland (presumably of Stormont) and consisted of three dwellings at that time. The dwellings may have belonged to the Lowry family, who held considerable land in the Ballymacreelly area during the 18th and 19th centuries. This is suggested by the initials 'W.L.' inscribed on the inner wall of the gabled porch.

When surveyed in 1974, the building was derelict and reported to consist of a single dwelling. In recent times it has been completely renovated to serve as two interconnected holiday homes.

Immediately to the south is a small, dilapidated, rubble-built gabled building with a crudely inscribed stone panel on its east façade, on which the place name 'Ballymacreelly' may be discerned, though the remainder is illegible. According to the owner, this structure was an extremely early Orange hall, possibly dating from circa 1795-1800. Ironically, it is said to have been used as a hiding place for two United Irish fugitives following the Battle of Saintfield in June 1798.
