Description
The Florida Bridge is a rubble-built road bridge likely dating from before 1834, situated on the Florida Road, approximately one and a half miles west of the hamlet of Balloo, near Killinchy. The bridge spans the River Blackwater and features a single, segmental arch springing from a rock foundation, visible on the north side at least. The narrow arch is constructed with closely spaced voussoirs, supported by long abutments. Flat coping defines the parapets. The bridge is partly concealed by vegetation and lies on a gentle bend in the road. It appears to be in reasonably good condition. The structure is marked as “Florida Bridge” on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1859-60, and is considered to be of industrial archaeological interest.
