Description
This is a long, single-storey, gabled house constructed after 1860, located on the north side of Saintfield Road, approximately 1.5 miles west of Killinchy. The western half of the house was most recently used as a grocer’s shop, although the shop front has now been removed and replaced with a modern window opening.
The front, or southern, facade features a modern timber-panelled and glazed door positioned slightly right of centre, with a nearby window that also has a modern frame. A further window sits to the right of this. To the far left are three taller windows, also with modern frames. The area behind these three window openings originally housed a shop, which featured two larger windows flanking a double door. A timber-sheeted door is set into the western gable. An extension with a corrugated iron roof projects from the eastern gable, and it contains a small modern window on both its eastern and rear facades. A small attic window is located in the gable above the extension, and both it and the other windows have modern frames. On the rear facade, to the far left, is a timber-sheeted and glazed door flanked by two small windows with modern frames. The exterior is finished with rough cast rendering, complemented by a smooth, recessed base. The roof is covered with Bangor blue slates, and there are three yellow brick chimney stacks. Three small Velux windows are located on the left side of the rear elevation; the building also incorporates PVC rainwater goods.
Historical map records from 1859-60 show two smaller buildings previously on the site, indicating that the current property was built in the later decades of the 19th century. Records related to the Lowry Family Estate Papers (PRONI D.2005/1/1-47) include deeds to land in Ballymacashen spanning 1741-1930, and Ordnance Survey maps from 1859-60 for County Down are also relevant.
