Description
A long dwelling of probable pre-1834 origin, set on a slight gradient on the north side of Saintfield Road, approximately 1 mile west of the hamlet of Balloo. The house is constructed in 'stepped' formation with single and two-storey sections arranged as three distinct blocks. It has been renovated in recent times with modern windows, doors, and interior finishes.
The front (south) facade comprises three 'stepped' blocks. The central block contains a recessed modern glazed door with large sidelight, flanked by large modern windows. To the west, a lower block has two similar front windows. To the east, a two-storey section has a ground-floor window and an east gable with a ground-floor window and two first-floor windows of varying sizes. The west gable is blank. The rear facade of the western block features French doors and a large bow window. The central block rear has four windows of varying size and a slightly projecting left-hand section. The eastern two-storey block has a modern glazed door with a small single-pane window above at first-floor level, and a lean-to car port is attached to this facade. A rough-cast finished facade with smooth rendered recessed base covers the entire structure. All three blocks have gabled roofs covered in Bangor blue slates. Four yellow brick chimneys serve the central and eastern blocks. PVC rainwater goods are fitted throughout.
Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1859–60 show a building on this site, likely corresponding to this dwelling, though all three blocks have evolved over time. The western block was originally a stable or outbuilding until recent years, and the eastern two-storey block may originally have been single-storey. The windows of the original house section appear to have been enlarged, possibly in the later nineteenth or early twentieth century, when the yellow brick chimneys were also added.
The property does not appear in the first valuation returns of circa 1835, likely because it fell below rateable value. However, circa 1861 valuation returns indicate the building housed two dwellings, occupied by John Marshall and John Ritchie, who leased them from Samuel Lowry. The current owner reports that the property holds a license to sell alcohol, allegedly obtained by a former owner specifically to prevent any public house opening in the area.
