Ballybunden Mill bridge, [off Saintfield Road], Kilmood, Killinchy, Co Down, BT23 6R[?]

A small, probable early nineteenth-century rubble bridge associated with a former flax mill, located off a narrow road north of the Saintfield Road, approximately one mile west of the hamlet of Balloo, in County Down. The bridge crosses the River Blackwater and provides access to the former mill complex. It is constructed of random rubble, with a small area patched in brick at the west end of the south side. The bridge features two low segmental arches, and large protruding boulders between the arches on the north side acting as a cutwater. It has rough coping to its parapets, which appear to have been recently patched on the north side. The bridge is partly overgrown with ivy and some weeds. The former mill complex to the northeast is currently used as storage. The bridge is depicted on the Ordnance Survey map of 1834. Valuation records from around 1835 indicate that the adjacent “flax mill and store” was owned by a Joseph Patton and had a rateable value of £3-19-0. The bridge is of industrial archaeological interest.
