Description
This is a three-storey, two-bay terraced house located on the south side of Sandys Street in Newry, forming part of a pair and turning the corner onto Talbot Street. The building is likely to date from between 1820 and 1839, appearing on an 1835 Ordnance Survey town map.
The building has a pitched roof covered in natural slate, with two gabled dormers featuring plain bargeboards projecting from the eaves at the front, and a single similar dormer at the rear. A cement-rendered chimney stands on the left gable. Half-round metal rainwater goods with downpipes are positioned on the left and in the middle of the front façade. The street façade is painted with line render. The main entrance, on the right, is a modern six-panel painted timber door with a transom light above. To the left of the entrance is a replacement 1/1 sliding sash window, which has an exposed box and trickle ventilation. Two 1/1 sliding sash windows, in traditional design, are located on each of the upper floors, aligned with each other but not with the ground floor openings. All windows have painted granite cills. The right gable abuts an adjacent property (HB16/28/106A), while the left gable abuts a lower building at 1 Talbot Street, with a rendered section of wall exposed. The rear elevation is not accessible, and a yard lies to the rear.
The building was occupied by John Dane in 1838, according to the valuation books. In 1863, it was recorded as measuring 15 feet 9 inches long by 21 feet 0 inches wide and two storeys high. While the building itself is likely of earlier date, the dormers are probably a later addition, indicating a subsequent refurbishment. The building is situated within a conservation area. It was previously recorded in the Windsor Hill ward as HB16/26/061 and was delisted on March 29, 2006.
