Description
1 Windsor Hill, Newry, is the right-hand end house in a terrace of five three-storey, two-bay houses that step up Windsor Hill. The building occupies a corner position at the junction of Windsor Hill and Talbot Street, giving it a wider frontage than its neighbours. It dates from between 1834 and 1858, with the terrace fully recorded by the second edition Ordnance Survey map of 1858. The 1863 Valuation confirms the house in its present form. The terrace was probably constructed by Thomas King, the recorded owner.
The building is constructed with a pitched natural slate roof, hipped to the right side, and has a cement-rendered chimney on the left gable. The façade wall is lined with unpainted cement render. The main entrance is reached via two granite steps on the right side of the right bay, with a wrought iron boot scraper on the second step. The door is modern painted timber with four raised panels and a plain transom above.
To the left bay at ground floor are two replacement 6/6 exposed-box sliding sashes with horns and painted granite cills; the right window has a trickle vent. The upper floors each have two windows aligned vertically, with 6/6 sashes on the first floor and 3/6 diminished-height sashes on the second floor. Left windows to both upper floors contain trickle vents. The left gable forms the party wall with the adjacent property.
The right elevation to Talbot Street is rendered to match the façade. At ground floor left is a single 6/6 sliding sash. The first floor has three equally spaced 6/6 sliding sashes, and the second floor has three 3/6 sashes. All windows have horns and painted granite cills throughout.
The rear elevation is partially abutted at ground floor left by a single-storey return with a natural slate roof. The exposed rear wall is lined with unpainted cement render and contains one ground floor window. A modern timber and glass door at first floor leads to a modern metal escape stair, with a 2/4 sliding sash to its right. To the left of the door, between ground and first floors, is a 3/6 sliding sash; directly above it between first and second floors is a larger 3/6 sash. At second floor is a 6/3 sliding sash with an extractor fan to the central pane of the top sash. The return has a modern door flanked by two modern windows facing the inner yard.
The rear outhouse, an integral feature of the property, has been substantially altered with a modern roof and smooth painted render walls. It is now a separate property.
The building's architectural value has been compromised by subdivision for flats. However, the terrace represents a good example of mid-19th century townscape development and forms an important grouping at a major entry route to the town. The building is within a conservation area.
