Description

2 Windsor Hill is the second house from the right in a terrace of five three-storey, two-bay houses stepping up Windsor Hill in Newry. A Grade B2 listed building of mid-19th century date, it represents a good example of townscape development from this period and forms part of an important grouping at a major entry route to the town.

The house has a pitched natural slate roof with a cement rendered chimney tied into the gable of the adjacent property to the left. Semicircular metal rainwater goods with a downpipe are positioned to the left of the façade. The façade wall is painted lined render, with three granite steps rising to the main entrance positioned at the right. The entrance door is a modern six-panelled stained timber piece with a patterned glass transom above. To the left of the entrance is a single 2/2 exposed-box sliding sash window with horns and a painted granite cill. Two similar windows occupy each upper floor, aligned vertically with the ground floor opening, though those at second floor level are diminished in height. The left and right gables form party walls with adjacent properties.

The rear elevation is more complex. It is butted on the right by a long low return, now stripped out and semi-derelict. To the left stands a two-storey return supported on a rendered corner pier, leaving the ground floor open, all in poor condition. The rear walls are finished in smooth render. At ground floor is a paired 2/4 sliding sash window with a central timber mullion and granite cill. The first floor has a 6/6 sash matching the façade pattern. Between first and second floor at the left, and at second floor right, are 3/6 sash windows. The return features a mono-pitched natural slate roof and has a 6/6 sash at first floor level.

A two-storey outhouse stands in the rear yard, integral to the property's character. It has pitched natural slate roofing and random rubble walls (rendered to the yard side). Facing the alley, it is fitted with a large tongued and grooved sheeted timber door at ground floor and a blocked-up window at first floor centre. Facing the yard, it has a door at ground floor and a sheeted opening to the centre, with a central opening with vertical bars at first floor.

The building's current condition has been compromised by subdivision work undertaken to convert it into flats. The rear return and two-storey return are in poor condition.

A building is shown on this site on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map, but the present house appears to have been erected, along with the other four houses in the terrace, sometime between then and 1858, when all five appear on the second edition map. The 1863 Valuation describes the house in its present form. Thomas King, recorded as the owner of the terrace, was probably responsible for its construction.
