Description
22 Sandy's Street, Newry
22 Sandy's Street is the second building from the left in a group of five three-storey, two-bay terraced houses fronting the south side of Sandy's Street. Dating from between 1820 and 1839, it is shown on the 1835 Ordnance Survey town map. The first valuation book records its occupier in 1838 as Eleanor Kerr. The 1863 second valuation describes it as 18 feet 9 inches long by 22 feet 6 inches wide by three storeys high.
Although the building has undergone some alterations, it retains many original features. The remainder of the terrace is no longer worthy of listing. Conservation area protection is considered more appropriate for this building than individual listing status.
The pitched roof is of artificial slate with a cement rendered chimney at the left. Semicircular metal rainwater goods run to the façade with a downpipe to the left (shared with number 23). The rear pitch has plastic rainwater goods with a downpipe to the right.
The street façade walls are painted line render with a raised eaves course. The main entrance at the right comprises an original six-panel, raised, fielded and scalloped grained timber door with a narrow transom light over. To the left of the door is a recessed boot scraper. The door opening is flanked by two painted render bands with a bracketed and moulded entablature over.
To the left of the door is a single 1/1 sliding sash window. There are three irregularly spaced identical windows at first and second floors; the right-hand ones are in line with the door, and the top floor ones are diminished in height. All windows have exposed boxes and granite cills. Left and right gables are party walls with adjoining properties.
The rear wall is painted and wet dashed in cement. A two-storey return abuts the left bay. The ground floor opening of the main block has a modern fixed window with two transoms over. There is a 1/1 sliding sash at first floor, and an identical window to each second floor bay, all with granite cills. The return has a natural slate hipped roof with a skylight to the left pitch. The back wall of this return has two 1/1 sash windows to the ground floor and two 2/2 sashes to the first floor.
The yard is enclosed by a two-storey smooth rendered outhouse. The façade facing the house has a timber sheeted door at the right and a 1/1 sash window at the left. At first floor is a 6/6 sash window above the door. Left and right gables are abutted by outhouses belonging to adjoining houses. A door in the back wall provides access into the garden.
