Description

19 Sandys Street, Newry, is one of five three-storey, two-bay terraced houses fronting the south side of Sandys Street. The building dates from the early 19th century, appearing on the 1835 Ordnance Survey town map. Historical records identify its occupant in 1838 as Grace Lascelles, and an 1863 valuation describes it as measuring 18 feet 9 inches long by 22 feet 6 inches wide across three storeys.

The pitched roof is covered in artificial slate with a cement-rendered chimney at the left. Semicircular metal rainwater goods run along the facade with a downpipe to the right, shared with the adjacent number 18. The rear pitch has plastic rainwater goods with a downpipe to the right.

The street facade comprises painted line render with a raised eaves course and raised painted base course. The main entrance, positioned at the right, consists of a four-panel modern timber door with a narrow transom light above. The doorway is flanked by two painted render bands with bracketed and moulded entablature. To the left is a single 1/1 sliding sash window with an exposed box frame. Three further identical window openings occupy the first and second floors, positioned irregularly; the right-hand examples align with the door, and the top floor openings are diminished in height. All upper floor window openings feature stop-end chamfered reveals and granite cills. At the time of survey, the upper floor windows were undergoing replacement.

The left and right gables are party walls shared with adjoining properties. The rear elevation is rendered and painted in cement. Two doorways at ground floor lead to a rear yard where a modern extension was under construction at the time of survey; the right-hand opening was originally a window but has been enlarged. Above this is a 1/1 top-hung window at first floor, and a two-pane casement window at second floor. The ghost of a two-storey mono-pitched roofed return remains on the left bay, with a door opening at first half landing and a small window opening above on the second half landing. Rear elevation windows have no cills and were being replaced during the survey. The rear yard is enclosed to the rear by a steep grass bank.

All architectural interest has been substantially lost following renovations. The building is located within a conservation area.
