Description

This property is one of a pair of three-storey, two-bay terraced houses situated on the south side of Sandys Street in Newry. The building has been extensively altered and is no longer considered to have special architectural or historic interest, although its contribution to the townscape character is acknowledged through its inclusion within the local Conservation Area.

The house has a pitched roof covered in natural slate, with a brick chimney on the left-hand side. It features half-round metal rainwater goods with a downpipe on the right. The rear elevation has plastic rainwater goods and a downpipe. The street façade is painted line render with a raised eaves course. The main entrance, on the right, has a modern six-panel stained door with a narrow transom light above. To the left of the entrance is a single 1/1 sliding sash window. Matching 1/1 sliding sash windows are present on the first and second floors, aligned with the ground floor openings, with the upper windows being reduced in height. All windows have painted granite cills. The left gable is adjoined by a neighbouring building (HB16/28/105B), while the right gable abuts a lower building (HB16/28/104E); a section of exposed wall on the right gable is cement rendered. The rear wall is cement rendered and a two-storey flat-roofed extension is present on the left. Two modern top-hung stained timber windows are visible on the second floor at the rear.

The building appeared on an Ordnance Survey town map of 1835 and was occupied by one Vaughn Quinn in 1838, according to the first valuation book. The second valuation book of 1863 describes the building as being 20 feet 3 inches long by 21 feet 0 inches wide, and two and one-third storeys high. The present building is likely the one shown on the 1835 map, suggesting a construction date of around 1820-1839, although the later addition of a third storey indicates a subsequent heightening.

It was previously recorded in the Windsor Hill ward as HB16/26/058 and was delisted on March 29, 2006.
