Description
14 Sandys Street is one of four three-storey terrace houses on the south side of Sandys Street in Newry. The terrace is symmetrically arranged around a central coach arch. This building occupies two bays to the right of the arch, though it probably also includes a room over the arch itself, making it three bays wide in total.
The house has a pitched natural slate roof with a rendered chimney on a raised plinth at the right, and a skylight to the rear pitch. Semicircular metal rainwater goods run down the left of the façade, with plastic rainwater goods to the rear. The street-facing wall is painted line render with a moulded rendered eaves course.
The main entrance at ground floor left is an original four-panel painted timber door with beaded muntin and bolection mouldings, with a narrow transom light over. To the right is a 2/2 sliding sash window with horns. The first and second floors each have two 2/2 sliding sash windows with horns, positioned in line with the ground floor openings. The top windows are smaller in height. All window and door openings have stop-end chamfered jambs and heads, and the windows are set on granite cills. The house is separated from the footpath by a low rendered wall which returns to the right side of the door.
The rear elevation is rendered. A single-storey return abuts at the left, above which is a single window to the back room on each floor; both are modern 1/1 top-hung replacements. In the middle is a similar but smaller window to each half landing. Over the coach arch is a 1/1 top-hung window to each floor, at least one of which belongs to this house. The return is also rendered with modern window and door inserts. At the back of the yard stands a two-storey outhouse built in random granite rubble.
The house first appears in the 1878 Valuation revision book as vacant, and was first occupied the following year. Its lessor was Adam Guffin, who also leased the other buildings in the block. In 1878, this building and no. 15 were valued at £15, whilst nos 13 and 16 were valued at only £13, suggesting that the two central houses each contain a room over the coach arch.
Although plainly detailed, the terrace forms a pleasing composition and is significant in the streetscape. The front wall retains all original features. The building is of late date and not of special architectural or historic interest in itself, but its value to the street is recognised by its inclusion within the Conservation Area. It is recorded but not listed.
