Description

This is a three-storey plus attic house, one of a terrace of four, built between 1860 and 1879 on the south side of Sandys Street, Newry. The terrace is centrally focused on a coach arch, and this building occupies the right-hand end of the block. It is largely original and well-preserved and is considered to have group value and significance within the context of Sandys Street, being located within a conservation area.

The house is two bays wide and features an artificial slate pitched roof with modern skylights to each side. The external walls are line-rendered with stepped stucco quoins on the upper floors, and exhibit banded rustication on the ground floor. A continuous projecting cill course is present at the first floor, with a moulded cill course above and a moulded eaves cornice completing the facade. Platbands run below each of these courses. The ground floor features a modern stained timber eight-panel door with a rectangular transom and a single-storey canted bay window to the right of the entrance, featuring a flat roof cornice and a single downpipe. The bay window contains 1/1 sliding sash windows with granite cills. The first and second floors each have two 1/1 sliding sash windows, all with stop-chamfered reveals. The upper floor windows are shorter in height. The door is offset to the left of the window above. The right gable abuts a lower building, revealing a section of cement-rendered wall. The left gable forms a shared party wall with the adjacent house. A rendered plinth and brick wall separate the house from the footpath, and the rear wall is also rendered. A two-storey return abuts the right side, with a pitched natural slate roof and rendered surfaces. This return has a modern door and window at ground floor and another modern window above the door at first floor. A lean-to shed is situated on the ground floor gable of the return. A 1/1 sliding sash window is placed on the return, and further 1/1 sliding sash windows are present on each floor of the main block.

The building first appears in the 1878 Valuation revision book and was occupied the following year. It was owned by Elizabeth Anderson, who also owned the other houses in the terrace, and all were constructed at the same time. The building is noted for its architectural style, proportions, ornamentation, plan form, the quality and survival of its interior, and its group value. It also holds local historical interest.
