Description
This is one of a terrace of four three-storey houses fronting the south side of Sandys Street in Newry. Constructed between 1860 and 1879, the terrace forms a pleasing composition arranged around a central coach arch. The building is located at the left end of the terrace and is two bays wide, with a skewed façade and gable wall, meaning they are not at right angles. It has a pitched natural slate roof with a cement-rendered chimney on the left side. Semicircular metal rainwater goods are present, with a downpipe on the adjacent property. The street façade is painted and rendered with a lined cement finish and a moulded rendered eaves course.
The main entrance, located on the ground floor to the right, is a four-panel painted timber door with a narrow transom light above. Adjacent to the door is a 2/2 sliding sash window. At each of the first and second floors, there are two 2/2 sliding sash windows aligned with the ground floor openings. All window and door openings have stop-chamfered jambs and heads, and the windows have granite cills; the top windows are slightly reduced in height. The side walls are abutted by adjoining buildings. The rear elevation is rendered. A single-storey return abuts on the right side, with a single window to the rear room on each floor above—these windows are modern 1/1 top-hung replacements. Modern window/door inserts are also present on the return. A two-storey outhouse, constructed of random granite rubble, is located at the back of the yard.
The house appears in the 1878 Valuation revision book entry and was first occupied the following year. It was leased by Adam Guffin, who also leased the other buildings in the block. The building’s value is recognised by its inclusion within the Conservation Area. It was previously recorded as HB16/26/050 within the Windsor Hill ward and was delisted on 29 March 2006.
