Description
Substantial two-storey/ three-bay symmetrical house set at east and to rear of Methodist Church (HB16/26/016A) on north side of Sandys Street. Hipped natural slate roof with two cement rendered chimneys parallel to façade behind ridge. Two conjoined hipped returns to rear elevation. Overhanging eaves with exposed rafter tails. Half-round cast-iron rainwater goods. Façade to Sandys Street is pebble dashed on rendered base course, with broad rendered string course between ground and first floors. All openings have moulded architraves and all windows have granite cills. Two granite steps up to central entrance with a pair of two-panel timber doors with transom over. At left and right is a tripartite sliding sash window (2/2 flanked by 1/1), all with horns. Over door, at first floor, is a tripartite window, identical to, but smaller all around than at ground floor; its sidelights have rounded top to upper sash. To left and right is a 2/2 sliding sash in line with those below. Left and right elevations of main block have similar detailing to façade (but with smooth line render). A 2/2 sash to ground and to first floor on each side. Rear elevation abutted by two two-storey returns, set parallel but slightly in from line of main block. Hipped artificial slate roofs. Wall finishes as side elevation of main block. Left elevation of left return (as viewed from rear) has a 2/2 sash to each floor. Right elevation of right return is blank. There is a 2/2 sash at top left of left return. Both gables are abutted at centre by a two storey secondary return, and also by a one-storey secondary return at left and at right. Between the middle and right secondary return is a 2/2 sash to ground and to first floor of right-hand primary return. The secondary return at left has a pitched natural slate roof. Line render gable, harled left cheek; right cheek abutted by middle secondary return. Half round metal gutters. Exposed elevations have modern windows. The secondary return at middle has a natural slate pitched roof, line render walls and half round metal gutters. Gable wall is abutted by one-storey porch (artificial monopitch roof; door on left cheek). At first floor of gable is a 1/1 sash. Right cheek of return has two 2/2 sashes to ground and to first floors. The secondary return at right has an artificial slate monopitch roof and half-round metal gutters. On end wall is a t+g door up four concrete steps. Modern window in left cheek. Right cheek blank. Gardens to side and rear.
