Description

This is a two-storey, three-bay artisan house built in the mid-19th century, likely between 1860 and 1879. It was constructed as an infill building within the larger market and corn store complex, designed to harmonize with the existing structures and the overall symmetry of the surrounding area.

The house is constructed of partly coursed white limestone with brick trim around the openings. The front features a central front door with a wide, plain door frame flanked by thin pilasters and a cornice above. Segmented, headed window openings are situated on either side of the door, with red brick trim, sandstone sills, and matching window openings above on the first floor, though of a smaller height. A brick corbel course supports a half-round metal gutter. Sandstone quoins are visible on one side of the building. The roof is natural slate, with a brick chimney. All openings are currently boarded up, and the property is vacant. The roofline is hipped where it joins No. 13 High Street. The remaining elevations are not visible.

This house forms part of a terrace fronting onto Market Street, and is associated with the second market project undertaken by the Draper’s Company. Historical records, including Ordnance Survey maps from 1832, 1832 (revised), and 1906, show that there were no buildings on this site prior to its construction; it represents a later infill development using matching stonework. This building, and its terrace setting, demonstrates group value. It is located within a conservation area.
