Description

11 High Street, Moneymore, is a three-storey, two-bay mid-terrace house with shopfront, part of a symmetrical late Georgian neo-classical composition in good repair. The building is faced with dressed ashlar stonework.

The ground floor incorporates a shopfront with a central glazed aluminium door with two panels, flanked by large display windows with plain painted plaster panels beneath the sills. A single large iron grill sits under one ventilating basement. Above the door and windows are blank panels and narrow pilasters topped with scrolls, which support a painted name fascia trimmed with scalloped leadwork. The fascia extends over a plain fanlighted four-panel door accessing upper floor accommodation, reached by two steps. The first floor contains two double-hung sliding sash windows with twelve panes each, while the second floor has two six-pane double-hung sliding sash windows of almost square proportion. Above the shopfront the stonework is faced with ashlar sandstone with a half-round gutter and natural slate roof. A stone-faced chimney stack with moulded cornice rises from the roofline. Between this building and number 13, stonework is recessed to accommodate a trunkhead and downpipe in unpainted cast aluminium.

The rear elevation is partly obscured by a single-storey flat-roofed back return. The upper floors contain a four-pane double-hung sliding sash window at first-floor level and directly above a six-pane example. A first-floor oculus and a semi-circular headed sixteen-pane double-hung sliding sash window lighting the staircase sit above it. These rear elevations are faced with coursed white limestone at upper levels, with a half-round gutter and natural slate roof. A slight recess in the wall marks the staircase position.

Number 11 forms part of an overall symmetrical composition fronting High Street that screens the market yard from public view.

The building was designed by William John Booth, architect to the Drapers Company, as part of their second major development project in Moneymore, completed in 1839. This ambitious scheme included a grain store and market house. The Ordnance Survey Memoirs describe it as "a very handsome and capacious grain store and another market house" expected to cost between five thousand and six thousand pounds. Plans were prepared in 1835 following proposals by Bridger identifying the need for such facilities. The complex was formally arranged, bounded on the west and north by High Street and Market Street respectively. Contemporary accounts noted "the whole pile of buildings is extremely well executed, has a most striking and ornamental appearance and is admirably calculated for the purpose to which it is intended."

The building was listed in 1975 and was originally occupied by the Moneymore Co-op Agricultural & Fruit Growers Society. In 1991 the present occupier took the premises and carried out improvements and repairs in 1993 under the direction of Ballydrum Design of Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex.
