Description

This is a pleasing, two-story, five-bay, long artisan stone-built terrace house with brick trim, dating to the late Georgian period between 1820 and 1839. It is part of the Market and Corn store project completed in 1839, undertaken by the Draper’s Company, and forms a pleasing terrace along Market Street. While recently renovated, the use of PVC windows and doors is a departure from the original character.

The house is constructed of roughly squared and coursed white limestone with new brick trim to the windows. The street frontage is five bays wide, with an off-centre PVC door and two, twelve-pane PVC windows on each side, unevenly spaced. Above, at the first floor, are four nine-pane PVC windows, centred over the openings immediately below. Due to a gentle slope of Market Street, the lowest course of stonework steps down to meet the footpath. The roof is slated, with natural slate and brick-built chimneys, which appear to be recent additions. A half-round metal gutter runs along the roofline.

In 1975, the occupier was R Graham, and in 1986, the owner was Mrs J Purvis of 34 Turnaface Road. This family carried out improvements to the property during the 1990s. The architect was William John Booth.

The building’s architectural interest lies in its style, proportion, and plan form, though alterations detract from its original appearance. It also has group value, and significance related to social, cultural, and economic importance, as well as rarity. The building is located within a conservation area.
