Description

This red telephone kiosk, constructed between 1960 and 1979, is a notable example of the K6 or ‘Jubilee’ telephone kiosk, originally designed in 1935 by the English architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and first introduced across the United Kingdom in 1939. It is situated on a broad footwalk beside the Moneymore Post Office in Moneymore, County Londonderry, and its presence is considered particularly appropriate within the Moneymore Conservation Area.

The freestanding kiosk has glazed sides, comprising 24 panes in two sizes, with a solid metal back and a shallow domed top. The roof features a horizontally illuminated sign on all four sides, bearing the word “telephone” in a wood-lettered design. A crown in low relief sits above the sign. A side-opening door has a finger grip pull handle and closer. The kiosk stands on a black metal base.

The kiosk's design distinguishes it as belonging to the period between 1953 and 1955, as it displays the St Edward’s crown motif, which became a feature following Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953. Later examples had this motif incorporated into a panel slotted into the fascia. The precise date of installation in Moneymore is unknown. It retains its original use as a telephone kiosk and is of commercial ownership. The kiosk possesses architectural interest in terms of its style, proportions, ornamentation, and plan form, and contributes to group value. It also holds local interest and demonstrates social, cultural, or economic importance.
