Description

10 High Street, Moneymore

An interesting example of mid-Victorian terrace house building in Georgian style, erected by the Draper's Company in the post-Famine period to improve the quality and character of Moneymore High Street.

The building is a three-bay, three-storey house with shopfront and basement, topped with a gable and natural slated roof. The High Street elevation features a shopfront with a central shop door framed by an upper glazed panel and plain fanlight. Large single-pane display windows flank the door on each side, with plaster panels beneath and a simple painted name fascia extending over the house door. Thin pilasters frame the doors and windows. The house door is panelled with a fanlight above. The first floor has 12-pane double-hung sliding sash windows, and the second floor has 6-pane double-hung sliding sash windows aligned directly below them. The windows have painted cills. The walls are smooth rendered and painted with quoins. A half-round metal gutter and single downpipe drain the naturally slated roof, which terminates in a gable chimney stack. A narrow basement area extends two bays along the front, fitted with two 4-pane double-hung sliding sash windows protected by flat iron grills.

To the rear stands a short two-storey flat-roof back return aligned with the entrance hall, featuring an open area beneath the first floor with a single-margined glazed double-hung sliding sash window. The back wall of the main house contains 16-pane double-hung sliding sash windows at basement and first floor levels, with a 6-pane window at the second floor. Above the flat roof of the back return is an arched 16-pane double-hung sliding sash window serving the stairway. The rear walls are smooth rendered and unpainted, with half-round metal guttering and a single downpipe. Steps lead down to a small basement area protected by metal railings. Outbuildings stand in the rear yard.

Number 10/12 High Street forms the southern end of a terrace of five houses that observe the building line of numbers 2 to 8. Numbers 10/12 and 14/16 are three storeys, while the remainder are two storeys.

The terrace was rebuilt around 1864 to designs by William John Booth, though he was no longer Company Architect at that time. It replaced an earlier terrace designed by Jesse Gibson. The current owners believed the house was built in 1860, and the houses were probably constructed by Daniel Magee. The Draper's Company likely sold the house around 1891 under Lord Ashbourne's Acts. The shop originally operated as a hardware business, though it now trades as a drapery. A back return was added in 1940. The building was listed in 1975 and lies within a conservation area.
