Description

Telephone Kiosk at Bush Crossroads

A cast-iron telephone kiosk of square plan, painted red, standing as a freestanding structure at the junction of Bush Road and Cavan Road near Coalisland. The kiosk was erected between 1942 and 1953, based on the K6 design created by the prominent architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V. It can be dated more precisely to before 1953, as it bears the Tudor crown motif which was replaced with St Edward's crown following the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in that year.

The structure is a compact, symmetrical design built on a concrete base. It has a shallow cast-iron domed roof carried on moulded pediments. The panels beneath the roof feature glazed opaque rectangular signs reading 'Telephone', surmounted by a raised crown moulding on all four elevations. Three elevations are fully glazed with 8x3 panes of plain glass, whilst the west elevation has a blank back panel with a foundry plate beneath. A timber and painted door to the south elevation has a metal door pull handle. The interior contains modernised telephone equipment, though the phone is no longer in working order.

The K6 kiosk represents the most successful mass-produced telephone box model introduced by the General Post Office, developed from Scott's earlier K2 and K3 designs. Distributed throughout the UK from 1936, over 10,000 examples were manufactured, and it has become an iconic feature of the British townscape. Such kiosks remain relatively rare in Northern Ireland. There are no other listed buildings in the immediate vicinity of this example.
