Description

This is a pleasing, two-storey, three-bay long artisan stone-built terrace house with brick trim, dating to the late Georgian period between 1820 and 1839. It forms part of a terrace that was built as part of a Market and corn store project completed in 1839, commissioned by the Draper’s Company. The house is located within the Moneymore conservation area.

The house has a three-bay wide street frontage with a slightly off-centre PVC door and a twelve-pane PVC window on each side, the western window being wider. Above are two twelve-pane PVC windows approximately centred above those below. The walls are of roughly squared and coursed white limestone with new red brick trim to the door and windows. The internal height is greater than that of the adjacent property due to a ground slope. The building features a half-round metal gutter, a natural slated roof, and a recent brick-built gable chimney stack. The gable wall is partially faced with roughly squared and coursed white limestone and sandstone quoins. The upper section of the gable is smooth, rendered, lined, and unpainted. The rear walls and back return are rendered. Modern iron gates at the gable provide access to the market yard and corn store.

Historically, the house was occupied by F Anderson in 1975, I Purvis in 1982, and G & R Stock in 2000. It was designed by William John Booth. The architectural interest lies in its style, proportion, and plan form, although alterations, including the use of PVC windows and a door, detract from the building’s character. The building also holds social, cultural, or economic importance due to its historical context. Primary sources consulted include Ordnance Survey maps from 1832 (revised 1856) and notes from an early survey.
