Description

9 High Street is a neo-classical gateway and terrace building dating from 1839 in Moneymore, County Londonderry. It forms the centrepiece of a formal five-structure complex designed by William John Booth, architect to the Drapers Company, as part of their second market project in the town. The building was constructed between 1820 and 1839 and is located within a conservation area.

The structure is built in sandstone ashlar work with a pedimented breakfront centrepiece. The focal point is a semi-circular arched gateway leading to Market Yard, flanked by square-headed lateral passageways. At springing level of the arch, a horizontal stringcourse runs across the facade. Above this sit two oculi on either side, each with circular architrave and pivoted window. The arched gateway itself lacks an emphasised keystone but is defined by a moulded band running across the voussoirs. Above the oculi are 6-pane double hung sliding sash windows, not quite square in their proportions. The moulded pediment is formed in timber and is supported on projecting sprockets. The spandrel is faced with ashlar sandstone in keeping with the rest of the composition.

The lateral passageways were originally articulated with ashlar piers on the gateway side, though these openings are now largely built up in random rubble and rendered blockwork. The gateway extends the full depth of the adjoining houses, with upper floor spaces allocated to each. A doorway has been formed in the lateral passageway to serve the adjacent property at No. 5/7. The gateway ceiling is flat with a boarded finish. Open iron gates are retained on both the lateral passages and the centre gateway. Between the top floor windows is a plain recessed panel. The roof is covered in natural slates.

The rear elevation mirrors the High Street front, though it is marred by an unsightly arrangement of waste pipes and back returns that obscure the lateral passages. The gateway forms part of a wider neo-classical terrace facing High Street and creates an imposing entrance to the market yard and corn store.

The Drapers Company undertook this ambitious scheme following plans prepared in 1835 on the proposal of Bridger, who identified a need for improved market and grain storage facilities. Contemporary accounts noted that "the Company are erecting a very handsome and capacious grain store and another market house, which is expected to cost from 5,000 to 6,000 pounds". The formal arrangement of the complex is documented on the Company's map of improvements proposed by the Deputation of 1839, with the structures bound on the west and north by High Street and Market Street respectively. Upon completion, it was observed that "the whole pile of buildings is extremely well executed, has a most striking and ornamental appearance and is admirably calculated for the purposes to which it is destined". The building was listed in 1975. In 1983 it was known as 9A and occupied by J & M Espie; repairs were carried out in 1984 under the direction of architect K McMullan. The portion adjacent to No. 5/7 High Street is now occupied by its owner, while that adjacent to No. 11 High Street forms part of that property.
