Description
This is a tradesman or labourer’s cottage, built in the 1840s by the Drapers Company and designed by William John Booth. It's part of a terrace of cottages on Hammond Street in Moneymore and represents the best-preserved front elevation of those built by the Company.
The cottage is a three-bay wide, one-and-a-half-storey, semi-detached terrace, constructed of stone, with gabled ends. The front elevation features a central door framed by a shallow, plain fanlight. Flanking the door are two-pane double-hung sash windows. The front wall is faced with ashlar sandstone, and includes a half-round gutter, a single downpipe, gutter stops, and a small, moulded sandstone kneeler against which sandstone bargestones stop. The roof is covered in natural slates, with stone chimney stacks at each end of the ridge. While the cottage is part of a semi-detached pair, the adjoining property has been rendered and painted over. A double-hung sash window, arched at the head, is set into the gable wall, providing light to the attic space. Three steps lead to the front door, and the windows have painted cills.
The cottages were erected to complete the terrace on Hammond Street, likely involving the demolition of some existing cabins. The builder was Bowen. According to Ordnance Survey Memoirs, Hammond Street's eastern end consists of neatly and substantially built sandstone cottages occupied primarily by tradesmen or labourers. The building is in private ownership and the current owner has resided at No. 35 all their life.
