Description

St John’s Graveyard is a graveyard situated partly on a steep slope of a knoll, containing 18th, 19th, and 20th-century memorials and the overgrown ruins of Glynn Old Church. The graveyard is bounded on one side by a rubble stone retaining wall. The church ruins consist of a nave and chancel, with the nave at the west end and the chancel at the east. Walls and gables of basalt rubble remain standing, but are incomplete, with an entrance on the south side near the west gable. Few architectural features of identifiable date are present. The east window is of Gothic shape with chamfered sandstone dressings on both the interior and exterior, but is incomplete and lacks tracery. A window in the nave is topped by a flat stone lintel of indeterminate origin. The graveyard is situated at the end of a leafy lane running alongside a river and is occupied at its west end by the 19th-century church, St. John's Church of Ireland. The site is believed to be that of a church founded by St Patrick in 435, and the church ruin dates from at least the medieval period. The church ruin is recognized as a historic monument (ANT 40:10).
