Description
This is an 18th-century bridge, likely built between 1720 and 1739, which has undergone minor alterations related to local industry but remains largely intact. It is a triple-arched masonry bridge carrying the main road over the Glynn River and a former mill stream. The bridge is constructed from random rubble basalt with dressed stone voussoirs forming the segmental arches. The piers are faced with rectangular cutwaters, with later low concrete plinths added to the base of each pier and cutwater. The bridge has a hump-backed profile and no pavements. The parapets are finished with rough stones laid flat and the western parapet sweeps around to a side road near the southernmost arch.
A later 19th-century wall, built of rubble, abuts two of the northern cutwaters, enclosing the mill stream, which is diverted from the river upstream and enters a segmental rubble archway below an adjacent house before flowing to the sea. A modern metal services pipe is attached to the eastern face of the bridge with steel brackets.
The bridge is located in the village of Glynn, close to the coast, with mature trees lining the south banks and house gardens along the north banks. It was shown on an Ordnance Survey map of 1832 and described in 1834 as "very old but in tolerable repair." Its features demonstrate industrial archaeological interest.
