Description
22 Main Road is a single-storey, gabled roughcast house dating to circa 1825. Originally constructed as a school by R.W. Johnston and initially established under the Kildare Place Society, it was later managed by the National Board before ceasing to function as a school in the early 1930s. The building is now a private residence.
The house has a distinctive bellcote on one gable, which contributes to its local historical interest. The main entrance is located on the side of a later, projecting porch on the east elevation. There are three windows to the left of the porch and one to the right. The windows are timber casements with a central mullion below a top-hung vent-light, and the stone cills are painted black. The walls are roughcast and painted white, likely a 20th-century replacement. The roof is covered with Bangor blue slates laid in regular courses. Two rendered chimneys are present: one on the west gable with a 19th-century pot, and another level with the porch with a plain, non-original pot. The rendered bellcote, lacking a bell, is on the east gable. A mixture of original cast iron and plastic rainwater goods are present. A window in the porch gable is similar to those on the front, set within a semi-circular recess. The 20th-century front door is rectangular and glazed. The rear elevation is of similar appearance, with one window matching the front, and three further windows with recent painted timber frames incorporating a top-hung vent over a fixed light. A recent projecting gabled kitchen extension has been added to the rear; this features a large rectangular west-facing window. The house occupies a corner site within the village, set back behind a small front garden and positioned facing onto the road junction, which forms the village centre. A kitchen extension was added circa 1987.
