Description

This is a large, two-storey red brick house of local interest, owing to its former association with St John’s Church of Ireland church in Glynn. It is likely to have been built in the 1880s and may be the work of the Larne architect Samuel P. Close. The house ceased to serve as a rectory in the 1980s and is now a private residence.

The house sits on a sloping site in a rural setting, outside a village, with an asymmetrical plan and gabled roofs. The main entrance faces east and is located within a single-storey porch on the south elevation. The three-bay south elevation features the projecting porch. The walls are of plain red brick with a notched brick string course at first floor level. The gabled roofs are covered in regular courses of Bangor blue slates, with white painted timber barge boards, decorative brackets and finials. A wall-head dormer is present, and red brick chimneys rise from the roof. The windows are timber sliding sash windows with a one-over-one glazing pattern and horns; those on the upper floor have Gothic arched heads, while those below are rectangular. A circular panel featuring a cross modelled in brick is set into the apex of the main gable. The building features cast iron rainwater goods. The front door is pine sheeted in a herring-bone pattern and set within a Gothic arch. The west elevation is similar in character to the south and includes a single-storey yard enclosure at basement level, reflecting the site’s slope. The north elevation is likewise similar, with a rectangular door leading to the basement. The east elevation incorporates a single-storey canted bay with dressings of red sandstone ashlar.
