Holy Family RC Church, Ballygowan, Larne, Co Antrim

The Holy Family Roman Catholic Church in Ballygowan, County Antrim, was built between 1820 and 1839. It is a gabled, rectangular church that originally appeared to be of 19th-century design. However, it has undergone renovations and rebuilding that have resulted in a loss of any early 19th-century character. A bellcote, which originally topped the main gable and contained no bell, was removed, and the church has been inappropriately remodelled. A modern, flat-roofed porch was added across the front of the building in the late 20th century. An oculus above the porch, containing coloured glass where it remains, is flanked by two mitred plaques depicting a sacred heart and crossed crook and keys. The church is situated in a rural setting, within a grassed graveyard enclosed by a wall constructed of basalt rubble. It appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1832.
