Gate lodge to Kilwaughter Castle, Castlehill Road, Kilwaughter, Larne, Co Antrim, BT40 2TP

This is a late Georgian gate lodge of modest size and simple design, likely constructed between 1820 and 1839. It served as a secondary entrance to Kilwaughter Castle and is of interest due to its association with the wider Kilwaughter Estate, although it has undergone alterations that have diminished some of its original character.

The lodge is rectangular in plan, with a gabled slate roof and a chimney on the west gable. The main entrance faces south. The south facade features a rectangular doorway to the right and a window to the left, both set within flat arches painted black. The front elevation is built of roughly squared and coursed basalt, painted white. The doorway has a modern door with a recessed plywood panel, and the window is a two-light, side-hung casement, which is not original. The west gable is constructed of unpainted basalt rubble and contains two small, blocked-up attic windows. The rear elevation also has basalt rubble walling, with one blocked-up rectangular window. The east gable mirrors the west, with an additional blocked attic window and a projecting curving screen wall of basalt rubble. This screen wall terminates in a secondary gateway to Kilwaughter Castle, with square basalt rubble piers, one of which is now truncated. Cast iron rainwater goods are present.

The lodge is situated in a rural location along a main road, with a modern single-storey shed located behind it. The lodge appears on an Ordnance Survey map of 1832.
