Saw Mill, Behind 25 Shanes Hill Road, Kilwaughter, Larne, Co Antrim

This single-storey building, originally a flax mill and later a saw mill, was constructed around the 1820s. According to the Ordnance Survey Memoirs of 1835, the mill was thatched and built of stone and lime, and described as being in very bad repair. It contained single gearing, three scutches, three wooden rollers, and was powered by a wooden breast wheel measuring 13 feet in diameter with 2-foot buckets. The building was initially 24 by 18 feet. It appears on an Ordnance Survey map of 1832 as a "Flax Mill" and on a subsequent map from 1930 in a larger form, still labelled as a "Flax Mill”. The building is constructed of stone, with some rendered walling, and features yellow brick dressings to the openings on its south front. It has a slated roof and lean-to additions in timber boarding on the north side. While architecturally unremarkable and now partially derelict, the building retains some industrial archaeological interest. It is situated in a rural setting next to a bend in the road and downstream from a derelict corn mill.
