112 and 112A Deerpark Road, Kilwaughter, Larne, Co Antrim, BT40 2TE

This is a late Victorian pair of semi-detached houses, built in 1897 to the designs of S.P. Close. Originally constructed as boys’ and girls’ schools, they were converted into private residences in the 1980s. The buildings have slated hipped roofs, terracotta ridge tiles, and decorative finials, with a central yellow brick chimney. The walls were originally brick but have been dry-dashed with limestone chippings. All windows have been modernised with plate glass. Inscription plaques on each house note their original function: no. 112 bears the inscription "The Countess Balzani Memorial Female National School 1897," and no. 112A bears the inscription "The Agnew Memorial Male National School 1897." The low return to the rear has a modernised appearance and follows the party line. The boundary walls are constructed of snecked basalt in rough courses. The houses stand facing the main road in a very rural location. Their main architectural interest lies in the inscription plaques that indicate their original function as schools, though the buildings have undergone inappropriate alterations that have changed their original architectural character.
