Description

This is an irregularly shaped graveyard situated close to the original farm buildings and just north of Kilwaughter Castle. It is bounded to the south and southeast by farm buildings of Kilwaughter Castle, to the west and much of the east by rubble stone walls, and to the north and northeast by a wall of concrete blocks. A derelict plain iron gateway marks the entrance in the northwest corner, with a wooden signboard on an adjacent farm building that is now illegible. The ground level is uneven, and many headstones are noticeably leaning. A small enclosure with low walls stands slightly above ground level in the northeast corner.

The headstones predominantly date from the 19th century, and none exhibit special architectural features. The graveyard’s layout is visible on an Ordnance Survey map from 1832. It is believed to be the site of an earlier church, previously known as the Church of Killochre and Ecclesia de Killwoghter, which gave its name to the parish of Kilwaughter (meaning "upper church"). The church had disappeared by the early 19th century. Described in 1835, the graveyard measured approximately 35 by 25 yards and was thickly covered with graves and headstones. The oldest tombstone bears the date 1786 (McDonnell), and most burials are of Presbyterians. The graveyard remained in use throughout the 19th century. According to a historical account, the old church stood in a corner of the graveyard, its location indicated by a hollow where Catholics were historically buried. The graveyard is a scheduled monument, designated as ANT 40:31.

Construction likely occurred between 1780 and 1799. The site is privately owned and includes a scheduled monument.
