Former Kilwaughter Female National School, Deerpark Road, Kilwaughter, Larne, Co Antrim

This is a late Georgian building of modest scale and a very plain style, originally constructed as a school and dating from around 1810. It has been altered by later, inappropriate modifications.

The building is a small, single-storey gabled house with a slate roof and a rectangular plan, and it includes an attic space. A chimney is located on the west gable. The walls have been cement-rendered in a Tyrolean style and are painted white only up to eaves level on the gables. Modern PVC rainwater goods and flush roof lights to the rear have been added, along with concrete cills. The north-facing front has a modern rectangular panelled door flanked by a rectangular window on each side. An inscription plaque on the front wall identifies the building as “Kilwaughter Female National School 1810”. The property is set within a grassed area with a front boundary wall constructed from concrete blockwork. The building stands on a bend in Deerpark Road, in a rural location viewed against a backdrop of mature trees.

Built by local subscription in 1810, the school appears on an Ordnance Survey map of 1832.
