Corn Mill, Behind 25 Shanes Hill Road, Kilwaughter, Larne, Co Antrim

The building is a corn mill, dating to the 1820s. It is a two-storey gabled structure built of snecked basalt in rough courses, with a terrace of single-storey cottages attached to its north gable, all now derelict. The front facade of the mill block features rectangular doorways and window openings set in flat arches; some openings are roughly blocked with timber, while others remain open. The roof is in a ruinous state. A ramped approach leads to the upper storey of the north gable, which features a large rectangular opening and a small circular stone opening in the apex. The style of the openings is similar to those found in farm buildings at Kilwaughter Castle. A mill pond lies to the rear of the site.

According to the Ordnance Survey Memoirs of 1835, the mill was then two storeys high with a slated roof, measuring 28 by 23 feet externally. It was powered by an iron breast wheel, 15 and a half feet in diameter and 4 feet 3 inches in bucket depth, with wooden arms, and was reportedly in good repair. A corn kiln was also attached. The mill appeared on an Ordnance Survey map of 1832 marked as ‘Corn Mill’. The building stands on a bend in the road in a rural area. It is currently derelict and of industrial archaeological interest.
