Description
A group of semi-detached houses in the Modern Movement style were built in 1945 for Larne Borough Council, designed by Belfast architect John Scott and constructed by D.R. Martin & Sons Ltd. The complex comprises three pairs of two-storey houses with flat roofs, white wet-dash rendered walls, and chimneys. They feature oversailing flat roofs with wooden fascias and asphalt covering. The original windows have been replaced with modern hardwood windows primarily featuring toplights and fixed lights, and the original window patterns have been lost. Later porches, one with a hipped tiled roof, have been added to numbers 132 and 134. An incised plaque at number 130 bears the inscription: ‘Borough Housing Scheme. This stone was laid by the mayor Sq. Ldr. A. Ferris R.A.F., August 1945. Town Clerk, J.A. O’Brien; Architect, John Scott; Surveyor, J.A. Caskey; Contractor, D.R. Martin & Sons Ltd.’ The houses are set back from the main road, facing it and overlooking a housing estate, with front gardens and boundary walls faced in dry-dash render. While originally retaining their flat roofs, subsequent alterations to the windows and later additions have negatively impacted the appearance of the buildings.
