Cottages at Ballyryland, Glenoe, Larne, Co Antrim

A terrace of five cottages stood at Ballyryland, Glenoe, Larne, Co Antrim, constructed between 1820 and 1839. They were notable for their unusual splayed plan, a feature that led to them being locally known as ‘The Crooked Row’ and appearing on an Ordnance Survey map of 1832. The cottages’ stone walls were rendered with a white harling, topped with slated roofs. Each cottage originally featured a sheeted door and a double-hung window to the front elevation. Three of the windows had full glazing bars, while the remaining two had sashes divided horizontally into two panes. The buildings demonstrated vernacular characteristics. They were described as somewhat run-down in a 1970 survey. The cottages were demolished around 1982 and have since been replaced by a modern house.
