Description
9 Glenoe Village is an early 19th-century house, built between 1820 and 1839, exhibiting the informal proportions and details typical of vernacular Georgian architecture. It retains its original exterior appearance and enjoys a pleasant setting. The house is part of a terrace, forming a group of considerable local interest and substantial visual appeal.
The building has been combined into a single dwelling with number 8 Glenoe Village and is further described under reference HB06/05/025C. It appears on an Ordnance Survey map of 1832. Restoration work took place in 1992-3 by the Hearth housing association, who unified the property with number 8 by adding internal stairs, thickening the shared party wall, and modifying the stone corbelling at the front to accommodate the change in level.
A watercolour painting by Andrew Nicholl, circa 1828, held in the Ulster Museum, depicts the original setting of the village; however, this particular house is not shown, suggesting it was either not yet built or obscured by other buildings at the time. The Ordnance Survey Memoirs of Ireland, Volume 32, and photographs in the Green Collection provide additional visual records.
The property is a private house within the townland of Ballywillin and is valued for its proportions, ornamentation, plan form, the quality and survival of the interior, its setting, and group value. It is considered to be of local interest and displays vernacular characteristics.
