Lower bridge over Glenoe Water, Glenoe, Larne, Co Antrim

The Lower bridge over the Glenoe Water is a late Georgian bridge, likely dating from the period of 1820 to 1839. It retains its essentially original appearance, contributing to the vernacular charm of the village. However, the bridge has undergone significant alterations to its fabric and its surrounding environment has been changed.

The bridge is a single-arched, hump-backed structure built of basalt rubble. It features rough stone voussoirs forming the segmental arch and rough stone copings. The parapet has been rebuilt at the south end on the west face, with the copings reset in thick cement mortar. Concrete plinths project from each abutment beneath the arch. A small rivulet, formerly a mill stream, runs alongside the bridge on the south side of the west face. The bridge is situated within the village, with buildings of the early 19th century on the east side and more modern buildings to the west. Grassy areas to the east allow for clear visibility of the bridge. To the west, late modern garden terraces now partially obstruct views of the structure.

The bridge appears on an Ordnance Survey map from 1832 and is referenced in the Ordnance Survey Memoirs of Ireland, Vol 32. It holds industrial archaeological interest.
