Description

Outbuilding beside bridge at 1 Glenoe Village, Larne, Co Antrim

This is an early 19th-century outbuilding, dating from between 1820 and 1839, displaying the informal proportions characteristic of its vernacular type. It stands on the east side of the main street of Glenoe village, next to a rubble stone bridge whose parapet stops just short of the south gable, contributing an element of vernacular charm to the streetscape. The building appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1832 and features in photographs of the main street taken in 1906 and later.

The structure is a two-storey gabled building constructed of rubble stone with red brick to the corners, all whitened. The roof is slated, mostly with asbestos slates, though in poor condition on the west elevation where the gable has cement upstands and a truncated red brick chimney.

The main entrance originally faced west onto the road but now faces east. The east elevation is two-storey with openings featuring brick arches or wooden lintels. The upper openings are almost all blocked using concrete blockwork. Two doorways are present: one brick-arched with an old wooden door, and one large modern rectangular opening with a concrete lintel, formerly used for a tractor and now serving as a garage entrance. Projecting concrete cills are present.

The west elevation, facing the road, is two-storey with openings arranged from left to right as follows: a rectangular timber ledged door at upper level; a timber sliding sash window, vertically hung 2 over 2 with margins and projecting concrete cill (lower sash obscured by whitened brickwork blocking); a blocked doorway below; a rectangular upper-level window with timber sliding sash as before and projecting concrete cill; and a rectangular ledged timber door at upper level. A number of wooden lintels are built into the wall at basement level, though the openings are now blocked.

The north gable elevation contains one rectangular timber sliding sash window, 2 over 2 with margins, in a whitened brick surround at first-floor level, with projecting concrete cill. The south elevation is plain gable walling.

The building stands in grounds grassed to the east and south, with a small metal-framed greenhouse to its south side. It has lost its original details and some of its original appearance through various modifications over the years.
