McNeill’s Hotel, 65-71 Main Street, Larne, Co Antrim, BT40 1JE

McNeill’s Hotel, originally established between 1840 and 1859, stood at 65-71 Main Street, Larne, Co Antrim. The date 1853 was inscribed in the pediment. The building was a three-storey structure divided into five bays on its street elevation. The central bay featured a modern entrance, an aediculed niche, and flanking windows on the first floor, with two windows at the second floor level, all surmounted by shaped gables. A public bar was located on the ground floor of the eastern bay. The intermediate bays contained two windows at each floor level and were topped by crenellations. Plain sash windows were set in pilastered aedicules on the ground and first floors, while the second floor had consoles supporting cornices. The façade was rebuilt in 1910 following a fire. The hotel was still owned by Henry McNeill Ltd. in 1970. It was demolished in the 1970s or 1980s and replaced by a block of shops and apartments. A photograph of the building is held in the Green Collection at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum (WAG 529), and a photograph is also reproduced in D Corcoran’s A Tour of East Antrim (1990). The building was delisted on 11 October 1985.
