Description

A group of late Georgian and Victorian cottages, dating from between 1820 and 1839, originally stood as pairs of single-storey dwellings. They are located in the townland of Ballylig, near Magheramorne, Larne, County Antrim. Initially called Dandy Row (numbers 34 to 45) and Quintin’s Row (numbers 46 to 61), the cottages were built in 1834 by John Irving, owner of the Magheramorne estate, as labourers' cottages, part of a larger scheme with the remaining cottages situated on Shore Road. The original cottages featured harled and whitened walls, hipped slated roofs with wide overhangs, and timber sliding sash windows. Accounts from the time described them as being built "on a very improved and neat plan," with an interior offering three rooms, spacious lattice windows, earth floors, plastered walls, rendered roofs, good chimneys, and projecting eaves, designed to be dry and warm. However, the cottages have since undergone extensive alterations, resulting in a varied appearance and the loss of original features. Consequently, they no longer possess significant architectural interest. They stand in a rural setting, facing directly onto a side road set back from the main road, with long gardens in front. Ordnance Survey maps of 1857 and 1921 document the cottages under the names Dandy Row and Quintin’s Row, respectively.
