Twin bridges over Shore Road, Magheramorne, Larne, Co Antrim

The remains of twin bridges, built in the 1840s or 1850s, originally crossed Shore Road near Magheramorne, County Antrim. They were constructed of snecked blackstone with rusticated voussoirs. The bridges were built in connection with the Magheramorne Lime-Works and appear on an Ordnance Survey map of 1857, indicating a construction date after 1832. The first bridge was described as having an elliptical arch, 15 feet in span and 22 feet high. A second bridge was 16 feet high and 10 feet in span. These bridges may have been replacements for earlier structures. They were possibly designed around 1853 by Charles Lanyon, architect and engineer, when the new road from Carrickfergus to Larne was laid out. The bridges were demolished around the 1970s, leaving only their abutments incorporated into the retaining walls that now line the road. An associated arch leading northwards off the main road still exists. The site retains significance as an example of industrial archaeology.
