Ice House at Magheramorne House, 59 Shore Road, Magheramorne, Larne, Co Antrim

This ice house, dating from 1800 to 1819, is a well-proportioned example of its type and of considerable local interest as part of the 19th-century development of the Magheramorne estate, built to serve the earlier Ballylig House. The structure is primarily brick and features a vaulted passage leading to a domical end chamber. The main entrance faces west, with basalt and limestone rubble exterior walls built into the hillside, covered by a humped profile of earth, rubble, and vegetation. The entrance doorway has brick dressings, now in a derelict condition. The ice house appears on Ordnance Survey maps of 1832 and 1857, but is unlabelled on the 1921 map and absent from the 1985 map. It is situated within a copse of mature trees a short distance from the main road, although its visibility is partially obscured by vegetation. The structure displays a distinctive plan and spatial arrangement, with an impressive structural form internally, despite the loss of some minor elements. It is of group value in this respect.
