Description

The site comprises a group of railway bridges within the Magheramorne Cement Works, situated near the shore in County Antrim. Dating to between 1840 and 1859, the bridges represent examples of early Victorian railway engineering, built to a conventional but typical design. These are robustly constructed and considered handsome. The bridges are likely attributable to Charles Lanyon, the architect and engineer who developed the railway line to Larne.

One bridge consists of a single-arched structure of basalt rubble, featuring shaped limestone voussoirs forming a segmental arch, a red brick vault, and squared rock-faced abutments. The bridge is inaccessible at the north end and appears to have no purpose. To the west stands a triple-arched bridge, also of basalt rubble with shaped limestone voussoirs forming semi-circular arches and basalt rubble copings, and red brick vaults. This bridge formerly carried the railway over pedestrian passages to a pier, though access through the arches is now fenced off. Between these masonry bridges are three flat concrete slab bridges, inscribed with the dates 1934, 1951, and 1953, and which carry the railway over pedestrian and local routes.

The bridge over the railway is depicted on an Ordnance Survey map of 1857. The site sits within an industrial complex, formerly a lime works, with various abandoned buildings nearby. The bridges possess industrial archaeological interest.
