Concrete hoppers, Magheramorne Cement Works, 100 Shore Road, Magheramorne, Larne, Co Antrim

The concrete hoppers are part of the Magheramorne Cement Works, originally a limeworks and later a cement works, located on the 100 Shore Road, Magheramorne, Larne, County Antrim. While most of the associated buildings on the industrial site, which includes utilitarian sheds and silos, are of the 20th century and considered unremarkable, the large concrete hoppers merit recording as a remnant of local industry and for their sculpture-like presence within the abandoned industrial landscape. Though the exact date of construction is unknown, they were likely built in the mid-20th century, probably between 1940 and 1959. The hoppers are situated within a quarry to the south of the railway line and main road that bisects the site, and this quarry has partially filled with water to form a lake. The site is in a predominantly rural area, though the immediate area is characterized by bare ground rather than trees. The hoppers are currently derelict and hold industrial archaeological interest.
