Description
This is a pre-war example of a K6 type telephone kiosk, located on the Ballypollard Road in Magheramorne, County Antrim. The kiosk was manufactured in cast iron and features small-paned sides, a timber door, and a shallow domical roof. It stands at the roadside in a rural location, near two listed buildings.
The K6 model, designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of King George V, was introduced in 1936 and distributed widely throughout the UK. Approximately 60,000 of this type were installed, with around 8,000 placed through the 'Jubilee Concession' for villages with post offices. A further 1,000 were installed under the 'Tercentenary Concession' to mark the Post Office’s 300th anniversary.
Based on the ‘Tudor’ crown motif present on the kiosk, its construction can be dated to sometime between 1936 and 1953. The motif was replaced with St. Edward’s crown following Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation in 1953. From 1955, the Crown of Scotland was used on kiosks in Scotland, with a slot in the fascia allowing for either version to be fitted. Production of the K6 model continued until 1968, when it was superseded by the more modernist K8 design. The kiosk retains its original function as a telephone kiosk.
