Description
This is a turf house with an attached pig crew, situated on a steep, elevated site near Corraghy in County Fermanagh. The building was constructed in the later 19th century, first appearing on Ordnance Survey maps from 1906-07.
The turf house is a single storey, although the rear elevation rises to two storeys due to the sloping ground, accommodating the pig crew below. It is aligned northwest-southeast along a lane to the east of Corraghy Townland. The roof is pitched and covered in natural slate, with modern half-round plastic rainwater goods. The walls are built from random rubble stone, enhanced by dressed stepped quoins. The principal northwest-facing gable features a full-height, semi-circular opening with voussoirs and a keyblock, characteristic of turf-house design. The northeast elevation has three tall, narrow ventilation openings topped with stone lintels. The left-hand side is two storeys, with a ground-floor entrance door leading into the pig crew, featuring a timber and tongue (t+g) sheeted door, a substantial stone lintel, and stepped jambs. A single-storey extension abuts the rear gable, which has a small square ventilation opening to the upper level. The extension is cement-rendered and has a monopitched corrugated metal roof and half-round metal rainwater goods, a corrugated metal door on the right-hand side, and blank elevations elsewhere. The southwest elevation mirrors the northeast with three tall, narrow ventilation openings.
The site forms part of a group including a nearby stable and byre, and a sweat house, all listed separately. Surrounded by a modern farm and two modern dwellings, the complex occupies an isolated location at the end of a long lane.
