Description
A single-storey, three-bay direct entry thatched house with rendered and whitened external finish, situated on the east side of a minor road running between Ballinamallard and Irvinestown, approximately two miles from the latter town. The building is oriented to face south-west.
The house is constructed with concrete parapet gables. The thatch covering is contained within these gables and extends over a projecting entrance porch. Each gable rises to a corbelled and flaunched chimneystack with semi-circular tiles bedded along its length, with a similar feature serving the kitchen hearth. The entrance consists of a timber-sheeted door in a square-jambed windbreak porch. The fenestration is limited to two vertically sliding sash windows to the left (north-west) of the entrance, each with sashes divided vertically into two panes, and one such window to the right. The sash stops are splayed and sills are of intermediate depths. This constitutes the full extent of the fenestration.
The building extends to the south-east with a corrugated iron roof accommodating a donkey house and byre. The outbuildings abut the south-east gable and are roofed with corrugated iron terminating in a tight verge. The entrance doors are of ledged and timber-sheeted construction. A small lean-to store of corrugated iron construction is positioned against the gable.
Across the roadway to the west stands a piggery of exposed stone with a thatched roof contained within stone parapet gables, part cemented. The interior is divided into two compartments, accessed by timber ledged and sheeted doors, one at the front (south-east) and the other on the south-west side.
Documentary evidence suggests a building matching the present structure appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1833. The second valuation of 1858 records the house as the home of Patrick McLaughlin, with the representatives of James Douglas noted as lessors, and a rateable value of 15 shillings. The building was thatched by the owner, Mr Patrick McDonnell, in 1979 using rye straw grown for the purpose. The condition of the house in 1992 was fair, but by 1994 had deteriorated. A repair scheme was undertaken with the involvement of Enterprise Ulster and reported complete in March 1995. The buildings have been restored to an acceptable standard, retaining all detail of the roof structure, windows, doors and fireplaces.
