Description

Corkill House is a detached symmetrical three-bay two-storey house built over a semi-basement around 1820 to designs by T.T. Houston. The house stands on the south side of Old Junction Road, Kilskeery, and was restored around 1960. It is rectangular in plan with a two-storey extension and central two-storey return to the rear.

The main building displays traditional Georgian proportions with a pitched natural slate roof and red terracotta ridge tiles. The ashlar gable chimneystacks are finished with decorative clay pots. The walls are roughcast rendered throughout, with replacement uPVC rainwater goods. The principal elevation faces east and features a central entrance door of double-leaf timber construction with a single fixed panel over, glazed panels above, and a round-headed timber Y-tracery fanlight. Five stone steps provide access to the entrance, which is framed by a non-intrusive timber frame pergola. On either side of the entrance are tripartite sliding sash windows with exposed boxes. Three windows are positioned at first-floor level. The basement contains paired diminished windows flanking the entrance. All principal windows are square-headed timber-framed 1/1 sliding sashes with smooth rendered surrounds and projecting masonry cills. The south gable is blank. The rear elevation exposes the basement level and is adjoined on the right by a later two-storey extension with flat roof, and to the centre by a two-storey return with cat-slide roof. The exposed section to the left contains single 6/6 timber sliding sash windows at each floor. The north elevation features one single-pane timber casement at first-floor level on the right. The return west elevation contains two 8/8 timber sliding sash windows (one at each half landing) and single diminished single-pane casements at ground and first-floor levels. A north elevation is blank, while the south elevation is abutted by a two-storey extension with flat roof and uPVC fascia.

The two-storey extension is detailed with a flat roof and uPVC fascia; its west elevation is abutted on the right by a single-storey porch extension with flat roof. The exposed section contains a timber sheeted door at basement level, a single diminished window at ground level, a dipartite window at ground floor, and two 3/3 timber sliding sashes at first floor. The south elevation is abutted at the left by a projecting single-storey entrance porch extension; the exposed section contains a single window at ground floor and a 3/3 timber sliding sash at first floor.

The single-storey entrance porch extension has a flat roof and uPVC fascia. Its west elevation contains dipartite 2/2 sliding sashes. The north elevation contains a single timber sheeted door at basement level. The south elevation (entrance facing) contains a glazed timber sheeted door with three horizontally divided glazed panes from the mid-rail, accessed by four masonry steps with replacement metal handrail. The east elevation contains one single-pane timber casement window.

A series of single-storey and two-storey outbuildings stand to the south, with pitched natural slate roofs and uncoursed exposed random rubble walls. Original timber fenestration remains largely intact, including lattice windows and square-headed vertically sheeted timber doors. The property sits within mature gardens featuring a walled garden to the north and a traditional farmyard to the south, in a secluded rural setting. The site is bounded on all sides by hedging and accessed from the road to the north-east through a pair of square coursed rubble pillars supporting cast-iron gates.

Historical records show the house appears on second and third edition Ordnance Survey Maps as 'Corkhill Lodge' and 'Corkil' respectively. In the Townland Valuation Records of 1828–40, James Lendrum Esq is listed as occupier, with the property valued at £14. The Lendrums continued to occupy or lease the property in subsequent valuations at similar values. Architectural historian Alistair Rowan described the property as "situated by the river, in a secluded little valley. Three-bay, two-storey Georgian on a semi-basement. Steps to the front door. Tripartite windows either side." The house exhibits plain Georgian proportions, with ancillary structures also appearing to date from the early nineteenth century. The rear elevation suggests an earlier aspect, as front windows appear to have been enlarged in the latter part of the nineteenth century. Local historian Michael McCaughey noted that "the entire ground, with a deer park and many gardens, were originally enclosed by a high wall and the place was noted for deer hunting in the early years of this century."
